THE CLASSICAL DIFFERENCE

Art

Art in education is often seen as ‘extracurricular;’ a subject outside of normal and necessary studies. While this is true in many settings, classical education provides a structure where studies are inter-curricular, which is representative of everyday life. Classical languages are realized in science texts, scientific discoveries are brought to light while learning about historical events, historical fiction brings to life times past that are still relevant today, and art and music demonstrate the history and effect of the times, past and present. All subjects work together to ensure a thorough understanding of the world and how it works. Pairing inter-curricular studies with our most important teaching of the biblical worldview prepares students to enter a broken world with the knowledge to navigate and more importantly, serve.

Providence, in accordance with its goal of seeking what is true, good, and beautiful, prizes the arts as a one of the many parts of whole learning. In art, students begin by learning that God is the original artist and the Creator of all things good and beautiful. In addition to the basics of visual art, students learn a history of different art eras and movements. This is so that they may better understand not only why and how art is created, but also how it is used for better or worse. This distinction is essential in ensuring students understand that while art is something that can be created and enjoyed recreationally, it can also serve a much greater purpose. This deeper understanding helps students to comprehend what they see on a daily basis in the world around them and in turn, allows them to be in a position to create art that is meaningful, purposeful, and well considered.

God, the source of creativity, is gracious in gifting His people with the ability to create. In classical education, we not only learn about and create art, but we aim to do so with the goal of glorifying our Lord.
