HOUSE CULTURE

October Update

From the desk of Spurgeon House President, Nathan Grogan

My name is Nathan Grogan, and I am proudly the president of the House of Spurgeon. This past month, the four houses have participated in several activities. First, in remembrance of the tragic September 11 terrorist attacks, we engaged in flag folding and learned a little bit about flag etiquette. We also humbly and respectfully battled in a high stakes kickball tournament. The upper school students did a great job of serving the younger students and their grandparents on Grandparents Day as well.  Finally, as the Fall Festival draws near, we had a day dedicated to learning the Virginia Reel dance, which was a good refresher for some of us and new for others. On top of the activities, the first quarter has now drawn to a close. It feels like the year just started yesterday, but I feel like I have known my newer friends for years. This means that the first quarter of reading points is now in, and the standings of the House Cup are beginning to shake out. While some houses may have pulled ahead, the results are a lot closer than I would have thought, and it is still clearly anyone’s cup to win. It will all be up to which house can have the best determination and effort paired with teamwork and respect. With that being said, we will have to see who can finish the year strongest and claim the House Cup.
